Having survived experimentation during her incarceration at a concentration camp, Yael has the unique ability to change her appearance at will. ![]() It was the only thing about her that ever stayed the same. Wolves howled up her arm… A whole pack of them-made of tattoo ink and pain, memory and loss. ![]() Once upon a different time, there was a girl who lived in a kingdom of death. Graudin’s writing twists the outcome of historical events to create a devastating ‘what if?’ as Yael claws her way into the lead with one mission to kill Hitler. In Germania, 1956, ten years after the Nazis won the war she fights tooth and nail for survival against the most horrendous odds in a selfless, tireless bid to put a stop to tyranny. She has stormed her way to the front of the pack to become one of my favourite protagonists of all time. Meet 18-year-old Yael Jew, child prisoner of war, experiment, escapee, young woman, shapeshifter, spy. This incredible alternate World War II history is a heart-stopping, world changing, truly unmissable second novel from The Walled City author, Ryan Graudin. How do you confront human monstrosity? Could you look your enemy in the eye? Wolf By Wolf is a howling, powerful must read for 2015. ![]()

7/6/2023 0 Comments Tutunamayanlar by Oğuz Atay![]() ![]() The story starts with Turgut Özben, a Turkish engineer. The cheapest at the time of writing is €905.75 (plus postage). In the meantime, copies are very hard to obtain. It very soon went out of print, though Olric Press stated that they hope that eventually a commercial publisher will dare to undertake it. It finally appeared in English in 2017, published by a publisher, Olric Press (Olric is a character imagined by one of the characters in the book) created for this book and published in a very limited edition of 200 copies at £50 each. It was considered untranslatable and then it was translated first into Dutch (in 2011 as Het leven in stukken) and then into German (in 2016 as Die Haltlosen ). ![]() ![]() It influenced, for example, the young Orhan Pamuk. ![]() It was a different story when it was republished in one volume, as it had a considerable success. Not surprisingly, it disappeared without trace. This book was first published in Turkish in two volumes in 1971-72, the publisher, apparently unable to afford to publish it all in one go (the later one volume edition was 724 pages). The ambience is that of a spaceship, called the Six Thousand on a distant planet called New Discovery, but there is little conventional world building. So we can’t feel like we’re getting to know individuals. We can only guess if any of the crew are behind more than one statement and, if so, what that indicates about the changes they are experiencing. That is perversely appropriate since the corporation they serve, as the preface makes clear, only sees them as functionaries and tools of corporate processes, who seem to be gradually failing in fitness for purpose in their workflows. ![]() Though vividly brought to life through their statements that reveal more and more extreme responses and dramatic changes, the characters are without names or histories enabling readers to identify with them.
