A few years later, my short story, The Boys of Summer, won the 17th Annual Writing for Children Competition held by CANSCAIP and The Writers’ Union of Canada. HEATHER CAMLOT is the author of the nonfiction What If Soldiers Fought with Pillows and the Skipping Stones Honor Award novels The Other Side and Clutch, the latter of which was named among Kirkuss Best Middle-Grade Historical Fiction. After 15 years in journalism, I immersed myself in the children’s literature scene, working at Mabel’s Fables Bookstore and volunteering with the Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP). I studied communications at Concordia University and then journalism at New York University. I also write nonfiction for kids: What If Soldiers Fought with Pillows? (also a Skipping Stones Honor Award recipient), I Can’t Do What?, Secret Schools, The Prisoner and the Writer, and the upcoming Becoming Bionic. ![]() Clutch was also a 2017 Best Book from Kirkus Reviews and a finalist for the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People.
